Tuxedo Measurement Chart

Instructions:

  • To Measure Height:
Remember when your parents measured your height: the process is the same for adults. Stand against a wall with your shoes off. Place a flat ruler across top of head to wall. Measure from that point on the wall down to the floor.
  • Coat Length & Sleeve Length:
The relationship between your height and the appropriate length for your jacket and approximate sleeve length is provided in the table below.

  • Chest and over-arm measurements:
For these measurements too many layers of clothing (i.e., sweatshirts, sweaters) and loose clothing will alter the measurements. When measuring the chest and over-arm, make sure you are measuring the broadest part of the chest and over-arm. Make certain that there is only a single layer or fitted shirt when measuring the chest and over-arm. Pull the tape snug for an accurate measurement. (This is important because the coat Sizing Guide was designed for snug measurements.)

  • Chest measurement:
Place the tape measure around your chest. Lower your arms down to their sides after your measuring tape is in the proper location. Note the measurement. Note. When measuring the chest, make sure the arms are lowered, the tape may slide up to 1” greater. The correct coat size can be determined from our Sizing Guide .

  • Over-arm measurement:
For the over-arm measurement p lace the measuring tape around the broadest part of your chest and shoulders to obtain the measurement. As with the chest measurement, your arms should be lowered to their sides. This measurement is critical if the gentleman has overly broad shoulders. Make sure that no fingers or bunched up clothing get beneath the tape. In most cases this measurement cannot be more than 8” larger than the chest. However those with exceptionally large arms (e.g. weightlifters) should take the measurement and subtract 8” from the over-arm measurement and subtract 8”. This will be your coat size.

  • Waist Measurement:
Position the measuring tape around the waist at the navel. Do not measure over a belt, wallet, cell phone clip, etc. as this will adversely affect your measurements. In the event of a large belly, measure the waist where the pants will be worn. Now continue with the seat/hips measurement below to confirm your waist measurement.

Hip Measurement

  • Hips Measurement:
Position the measuring tape around the waist at the navel. Do not measure over a belt, wallet, cell phone clip, etc. as this will adversely affect your measurements. In the event of a large belly, measure the waist where the pants will be worn. Now continue with the seat/hips measurement below to confirm your waist measurement.

  • Neck Measurement (for shirt size):
Put 2 fingers between the tape measure and neck to ensure a comfortable fit. Record the measurement.
  • Sleeve Length Measurement:
When measuring the sleeve length, make sure you start the tape in the middle of the neck and that the tape measure goes over the top of the shoulder. Take the tape down the arm to the point of the elbow and then measure an inch and a half past the wrist bone. It is always better to measure long versus short.
